Oxford County Library

Decodable Book Collection

The Oxford County Library is excited to announce the addition of decodable books to our collection, thanks to an Ontario Library mini-grant provided through the International Dyslexia Association Ontario.  Decodable books are a structured literacy approach to learning how to read.  Decodable books often focus on teaching specific letter-sounds, spelling patterns, and/or morphological patterns (e.g. prefixes and suffixes) that the reader is taught. As the reader learns new parts of the alphabetic code the vocabulary used in the text expands to include more letter-sound combinations and spelling patterns. Many decodable books are organized in sets, gradually introducing new sounds and spelling patterns as the child works through the set of books. Our collection includes whole phonics kits and BOB books that are perfect for young readers and early literacy exploration. We have also added junior fiction books to encourage children to continue reading up through the decodable collection. Search "decodable" or "bob books" in our catalogue at www.ocl.net to discover our these titles and watch for the red decodable sticker on book spines next time you visit your local OCL branch!
